Original works by iconic graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher

Original works by iconic graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher were on display at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea, during January 11 until April 11, 2018.

A Dutch painter of the 20th century, Escher was a surrealist who created a world that transcends reality and fiction by using mathematical lines. His Relativity lithograph is famous for inspiring the Penrose staircase scene in Christopher Nolan’s Academy Award-winning Inception.

Escher’s work challenges the world to think that the things we perceive absolute are all relative and depends on from where we look. He drew what he saw in his dreams, the abstract world which reaches beyond what you see and perceive. Escher’s spellbinding work inspired people to run free with their imagination across a wide spectrum of areas, including art, mathematics, science, architecture, music, design, and film. For this reason, his mathematically precise and visually pleasing work was more admired by mathematicians, psychologists, and designers than traditional painters.

Housed in the Yonsei University Museum, the M.C. Escher Exhibition showcased various pieces that show his unique perception of creativity and convergent thinking. The exhibition was held every day from 11 am to 8 pm during January 11 through April 11, 2018. Various features of the M.C. Escher Exhibition at Yonsei University included a creative art program open to the public, where visitors participated in puzzle games and create patterns for Escher’s Lizard. Docents were also available three times a day on weekdays.
