Yonsei University was awarded Teaching and Learning Strategy of the Year at the 2019 Times Higher Education (THE) Awards Asia.  The winners of 2019 THE Awards Asia were announced at the THE Asia Universities Summit held in Abu Dhabi on May 1.

Commenting on Yonsei University as the Teaching and Learning Strategy of the Year winner, the judges said that they were “impressed by the deep and far-reaching measures” taken by the university to put digital literacy at the heart of its strategy, “with the clear aim of equipping its students and graduates to excel in their studies and their future careers.”

“The combined effect has been to bring to life the university’s stated ambition to ‘educate future leaders of social innovation,’” they said.

Yonsei University has embarked on a forward-thinking mission to implement digital literacy education throughout campus, and its comprehensive efforts have been recognized with the Teaching and Learning Strategy of the Year of 2019 THE Awards Asia.

Among various initiatives, Yonsei has opened the Yonsei Digital Creative Campus and introduced a new undergraduate liberal arts curriculum for creative digital literacy education called “Content Writing” course sequence, underlining the importance of digital literacy skills in academic life and for students’ future careers. Yonsei also signed a multilateral agreement with Adobe, Samsung Electronics, Korean media and entertainment content company CJ E&M, and telco KT, to ensure digital innovation was a key part in students’ learning, and launched Yonsei Digital Experience Center (Y-DEC) to oversee innovation in digital literacy education on campus, including Asia’s first educational program utilizing Adobe’s cloud platform.

Key achievements in 2018 included the welcoming of Yonsei University’s first students for its digital-based Intelligence Design graduate program, created to equip students with the digital, business, and artistic skills demanded in the Fourth Industrial Revolution via an interdisciplinary curriculum based on design and technology. Yonsei also established the Culture & Media major within the Global Leaders College to provide undergraduate students with professional digital literacy skills.

To ensure that all members of the Yonsei community maximize their digital literacy experience, Yonsei University has provided seminars, consulting services and incentive programs for faculty to incorporate new techniques into their teaching, including storytelling with apps and flipped classroom models using digital technology. Yonsei has also continued engaging student participation via digital experience events with famous professionals and creators as well as digital creativity contests.

The inaugural THE Awards Asia recognize best practice in university leadership and institutional performance, focusing on five key areas of university activity: Teaching and Learning Strategy of the Year, International Strategy of the Year, Leadership and Management Team of the Year, Outstanding Support for Students, and Technological Innovation of the Year. Yonsei University was selected as a short-listed finalist for Teaching and Learning Strategy of the Year and Technological Innovation of the Year.

Yonsei University continues its mission to generate positive impact on society for the future, having recently placed number one in the world for Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure in the THE University Impact Rankings 2019.
