- Yonsei Reveals the Virtual Future of Education and Research with World’s First 5G OPEN Platform Decemver 27, 2018
Developing innovative education and research for 5G-based technologies that benefit society
Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea has announced its launch of the world's first 5G OPEN (Open Platform for Evolved Networks) in partnership with KT, Korea’s largest telecommunications company, to pioneer innovative education and research for 5G-based technologies that can benefit the future society.
5G OPEN is an R&D platform based on a 5G commercial network established as part of an agreement signed by Yonsei University and KT last October. It is the Korean testbed of the Korea-Europe joint research initiative PriMO-5G Project*, a joint research consortium of European and Korean universities and industry partners with the initiative to demonstrate an end-to-end 5G system providing immersive video services for moving objects.
This new platform will connect Yonsei University’s main Sinchon Campus in Seoul and Songdo International Campus in Incheon based on KT’s 5G commercial network, making it possible to develop and test a wide variety of 5G convergence services – including telemedicine, disaster relief, and self-driving.
On December 6, Yonsei University officially announced the launch of the world’s first commercial 5G network platform at the Yonsei-KT 5G OPEN 2018 ceremony held on campus, with feature events including an academic workshop on innovative research and education cases utilizing 5G, and a holographic lens user-experience theme park for students and faculty.
During the launching ceremony, Seong-Lyun Kim, Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Yonsei and Co-director of PriMO-5G Project, demonstrated an airborne platform that remotely controls drones by transmitting images between Yonsei’s Sinchon and Songdo campuses. With the 5G network, his research team in Sinchon controls an emergency rescue drone in collaboration with KT's Skyship at the International Campus in Songdo, where immersive video data taken from the drone are instantly sent back to Sinchon to obtain real-time awareness. This demonstration proved 5G’s low latency in remote control and ultra-high speed in image transmission.
Professor Kim’s demonstration introduced an innovative use case of 5G technology in real-time disaster scenarios; the Skyship platform and drones transmit images from disaster areas to the ground control center and vehicles, where the photos are interpreted to issue commands. The demonstration showed how 5G mobile communication effectively combines low-delay performance, distributed image processing, and AI research, thus focusing on the potential research directions to which 5G technology can be applied.
During the academic workshop following the ceremony, Yonsei researchers and KT representatives introduced joint research cases based on 5G OPEN. Faculty members from the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, and Human Ecology at Yonsei University presented futuristic approaches to research and education that apply 5G-based convergence services such as remote robot treatment, AR-based dental treatment, and AR-based interior architecture education. In addition to supporting interdisciplinary research in various fields, the platform is expected to introduce next-generation media such as immersive media into the classroom for educational purposes. Professor Kim’s presentation on the PriMO-5G Project and KT's 5G Use Case opened lively discussion on the prospects of major convergence services in the upcoming 5G era and their envisioned usage for higher education.
As part of the official events, Yonsei University Library and the College of Human Ecology jointly showcased educational content for space design using immersive media at Yonsei-Samsung Library’s MakerSpace, a collaborative working space that uses high tech and traditional tools for creating, learning and exploring. As part of the collaborative project, College of Human Ecology students introduced creative design solutions for MakerSpace which were virtually visualized through a holographic lens.
Visitors were able to understand how the various features of immersive media enabled the design students to optimize their design plans through real-time simulation as well as include details of the furniture in their space designs. Participants were able to get first-hand experience with the holographic lens to virtually walk through the showcased space designs, as well as visualize dinosaurs and the solar system.

*About PriMO-5G Project
The PriMO-5G is a joint research consortium of European and Korean universities and industry partners with the initiative to demonstrate an end-to-end 5G system providing immersive video services for moving objects. This will be done by cross-continental testbeds that integrate radio access and core networks developed by different PriMO-5G members. Consortium members include leading research universities of Europe and Korea - Yonsei University, KAIST, Chung-Ang University, Aalto University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and King’s College London - as well as leading industry players, including KT, Ericsson, NI Europe, Cumucore, and EUCAST.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program and is also supported by the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Promotion grant funded by the Korean government.
