Global Health Security graduate student Lina from Laos

Name: Lina Hongkham XAYAVONG

School: Graduate School of Public Health

Specialization: Global Health Security (Master’s candidate, entering class of ‘19)

“I have worked as a technical staff at Lao Tropical and Public Health Institute, which is affiliated to the Ministry of Health of Laos. Currently, I am enrolled in the master’s degree program specializing in Global Health Security at Yonsei University. Composed of more than 20 students from different backgrounds, the program approaches the given matter from a range of perspectives, including an active interaction between experts and students.

I have chosen to study this course because it is directly related to the work that I had been doing before coming to South Korea—a technical staff at a health institute in Laos. The Global Health Security program at Yonsei offers insight into the system of strong and resilient public health systems that could detect, prevent, or respond to threats of infectious disease that may outbreak anywhere around the world. As apparent from the outbreak of COVID-19 and its fast spread, in a globalized society like the current era, an infection in one place can threaten the entire world. Therefore, I found it highly important to learn about Global Health Security and apply it to my workplace in real life.

I have specifically chosen South Korea as the country for my postgraduate studies because of the numerous opportunities that this country offers. For instance, I worked as an SP Fellow at KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency), and it was a very memorable experience for me to take away. KOICA always gives opportunities for students to be part of the organization; I was able to get in by showing my strong enthusiasm to be a member and actively make contributions to KOICA. Besides these opportunities, South Korea is a dreamland for me because of its culture - such as its comfortable location for travel, incredible food, and excellent educational institutions like Yonsei where I have been studying.

After completing my master’s degree at Yonsei, I plan to return to the work that I was doing in my motherland before coming to South Korea. However, if I have a chance, I will apply for other scholarships that could support me to study in South Korea again. I strongly wish that I could come back one day.”
