KGSP graduate Ashraf shares tips on how to study and work in Korea

Yonsei alumnus Ashraf Gharsan shares his job-searching experience with international students who wish to pursue careers in Korea after graduation.

Name: Ashraf Gharsan from Yemen

Major: Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Class of 2017)

I joined LG Electronics in April 2017 after completing the LG Electronics Foreign Student Internship the previous winter. I am currently part of the Overseas Engineering Solution team in the Air Solutions division. We oversee creating tools and materials related to the overall performance and efficiency of commercial air conditioning (CAC) systems.

I became so interested in Korea during high school when I learned about the Miracle on the Han River*. Korea felt like the right industrial country to pursue my studies and career in engineering. Yonsei University is simply one of the top-tier destinations to start the journey, and I was able to attend as a Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) recipient. I was determined to get my Electrical & Electronic Engineering degree at Yonsei and then get solid work experience in Korea as an engineer.

I maximized my four years at Yonsei by doing a little of everything: studies, fun with friends, student programs, part-time jobs. Pursuing student opportunities such as internships, programs, workshops helped me the most in getting a job; I acquired necessary interpersonal and practical skills, I learned about the Korean culture, and I ultimately got my current position at LG Electronics via its internship program. I think the combination of my degree, acquired skill set, and work experience best prepared me for the future.

I advise international students planning to work in Korea that it’s a great advantage to hone your Korean language skills. Also, student programs can be fun as well as a medium for networking and gaining different skills and experiences, so look for as many opportunities both offline and online such as the various Yonsei University portals and websites. I think students should invest time and effort in both to be prepared for a career here in Korea or abroad.

*Miracle on the Han River: The period of rapid economic growth in South Korea following the Korean War (1950–1953), during which the nation transformed from a developing to a developed country.
