How Yonsei GLC Helped Me Pursue my Dreams in the Korean Music Industry

Global Leaders College student Fanny Gerlach from Austria

Name: Fanny Gerlach

College: Global Leaders College (GLC)

Major: Culture & Media

“At the age of 12, it became my dream to study and live in Korea. It was when I came across a K-pop song for the very first time, and my interest in joining the Korean music industry started to develop. By the time I turned 16, I had an opportunity to participate in the one-month Summer Special Program provided by Yonsei University Korean Language Institute (KLI). After spending time at Yonsei, I was determined to come back to Yonsei as a regular student. I was certain that enrolling in Global Leaders College (GLC) would help me pursue my dreams in the Korean music industry.

I always struggled to learn foreign languages when I couldn’t practice using that language in real-life situations. I had studied Korean at the University of Vienna for a year before coming to Yonsei, but all of my Korean classes were taught in German, so I couldn’t properly learn the language the way I wanted to. On the other hand, in my first year at GLC, I had a mentor who I could study with 1:1 once a week; all my classes were taught in Korean, and I had a lot of Korean classmates with whom to practice Korean. GLC also provides Korean language courses for any GLC students who want to improve their Korean language skills. I had a lot more opportunities than I had in Austria, which allowed me to learn Korean quickly.

My favorite class right now is Visual Storytelling, a Culture & Media course. Not only is it the first class that I am taking for my major, but we learned Photoshop skills and the connection between media and its impact on Korean culture. I have always had an old liking for creative art, and the fact that this class serves as an introductory course for what I will be studying in my major is intriguing.

Something I really like about GLC is that the college itself is very supportive and friendly towards its students. I remember our freshmen orientation was over one week and I could see that the GLC Student Council tried to make us feel comfortable and helped us get through the semesters. GLC is still a young college compared to other regular majors at Yonsei, but it is trying to improve by communicating with us and analyzing what is best for us. I also find it amazing how a variety of students from different backgrounds can connect with each other through their passion for learning Korean at GLC. We have a lot of overseas Korean students as well as students from other continents, such as Asia and Europe, learning in Korean. This cultural diversity is what I feel makes GLC unique from different majors."
