Yonsei GSIS student Nadine Besari is on a mission to encourage more people to be interested in para-sports.

Nadine first came to Korea armed with a scholarship to pursue her undergraduate studies in international trade. Her main passion has always been sports, but she decided to explore a wider range of career options by pursuing a Master's degree at the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) of Yonsei University. One of her GSIS classes inspired her to think about how sports management can work hand-in-hand with sustainable development.
“My passion has always been sports. During my undergrad years, I had volunteered for the Asian Games as well as the Youth Para-sports Camps in Korea, where I helped with translation work. Then in October 2017, I was given the opportunity to join the steering committee for the Asian Para-games, where I was the sub-coordinator for volunteers who were helping out with the table tennis games. I had to manage everything from the venue to the volunteers' assignments. It was a great experience as I learned not only how to manage events and a team, but also how to manage myself. I also learned how to work with people from a lot of different cultures and different belief systems, as well as how to be a responsible leader.
It was during a sustainable development class at Yonsei where I realized that perhaps I could actually pursue a career in sports management which is still relevant to my degree in global studies – that is, to marry my passion for sports with sustainable development. This was what sparked my interest in para-sports, especially after my own volunteer and work experience in the field. Although I still have another semester to go, my plans after graduation are to work here for a bit, maybe in a sports company or the Korean Paralympic Committee. I hope that more people will show more interest in para-sports because para-sports is just as fun to watch, maybe even more fun!
I think I will miss the annual AKARAKA festival the most when I graduate – I strongly encourage all Yonsei students to make time to attend! It was the most memorable experience in Yonsei for me because it made me feel a sense of togetherness with the rest of the student body - dancing and cheering together. The school spirit during Akaraka is something that I have never experienced before."
