Yonsei Professor Hong Jong-il of the College of Material Science and Engineering has been selected as a recipient of the 2012 National Research and Development Excellent Achievements 100 Award for his work on nanoscale patterning.  The winners of this prestigious award, who were recognized in an August 28 ceremony at the Seoul Education and Culture Theater, were chosen through a competitive evaluation process administered by a variety of governmental departments and institutes.
The results of Professor Hong’s research on nanoscale patterning were published in the prestigious journal Nature Technology, and the “green” technology developed by his Yonsei research team promises to lead to the development of new electronic, optical, and magnetic devices and systems.  In particular, this technology will have important applications for the evolution of wireless broadband (WiBro) and digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB), as well as the development of mobile and digital devices with faster processing and larger memory storage capabilities.  It is also believed that Professor Hong’s work will lead to significant advancements in Korea’s communication infrastructure and spur further applied research in the field of nanotechnology.
