Yonsei University has been ranked 114th in the 2013 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings.  Released September 10, this year’s QS results revealed Yonsei to be the top private university in Korea, despite dropping two places from last year’s rankings.  Encouragingly, Yonsei’s overall score was 1.6 points higher than last year, reflecting the continual progress made by the university since 2007, when it was ranked 236th in the world.
Yonsei’s score for Academic Reputation was 76.3, placing it 112th, while its scores for Employer Reputation and Faculty-to-Student Ratio were, respectively, 82 (97th) and 86.2 (106th).
Most discouraging was Yonsei’s score of 31 (386th) for Research Citation Count, which constitutes 20% of a university’s overall evaluation by the QS World University Rankings.  In terms of Faculty Areas, Yonsei ranked 83rd in Social Sciences and Management, 124th in Arts and Humanities, and 154th in Natural Sciences.
In compiling their annual rankings, the QS World University Rankings uses six criteria:  Academic Reputation (40%), Employer Reputation (10%), Student-to-Faculty Ratio (20%), Citations per Faculty (20%), International Faculty Ratio (5%), and International Student Ratio (5%).  After comparing some 800 institutions from throughout the world, QS deemed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) to be the world’s top university, followed by Harvard University (USA), the University of Cambridge (UK), University College London (UK), and Imperial College London (UK).
