Special Lecture: Kang Sue-jin, Principal Dancer at Stuttgart Ballet Kang Sue-jin, a prima ballerina at Germany’s Stuttgart Ballet, delivered a special lecture on May 8 at the Chang Ki Won International Conference Hall of the Yonsei-Samsung Library to celebrate her recently published autobiography, The Passionate Heart Takes a Long Breath. Some 300 fans attended the lecture, many arriving an hour early. In her lecture, Kang emphasized that practice, self-discipline, and remaining confident in your skills are what bring about satisfaction and improvement. Testifying to the validity of the saying “better late than never,” Kang spoke of taking up ballet in middle school, which is considered late for ballerinas. She also revealed the various frustrations and failures she has experienced in her career, while also discussing her training at the Monte-Carlo Ballet Academy in Monaco and her professional life at the Stuttgart Ballet. In 1985, she became the first Asian winner of the Prix de Lausanne, an international dance competition held annually in Switzerland; and, in 1986, at the age of 17, she was the youngest dancer ever to enter the Stuttgart Ballet. Kang is one of the oldest ballerinas still performing, and she continues to enjoy worldwide fame.
