Baekyang-ro, the historic, central road running through Yonsei’s Sinchon Campus, is poised to undergo a major transformation. On May 11, the groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held in front of the Hangul Tower. Dr. Jeong Jong-hoon, Yonsei Chaplin, presided over the ceremony. The director of the Baekyang-ro construction consortium, Kim Young-sae, gave a brief overview of the project’s timeline; according to Kim, the construction permit was obtained in April, and work is set to begin in August. The renovation is anticipated to take two years, with its completion coinciding with Yonsei’s 130th anniversary in 2015. The renovation project will include a pedestrian path above ground (called “Under the Wood”), while underground there will be parking spaces, along with a 500-seat auditorium, a faculty cafeteria, a conference hall, a communication lounge, cultural spaces, and convenience stores.
