The 128th anniversary of Yonsei’s founding was celebrated on May 11. On this beautiful spring day, a variety of ceremonies and events took place, including a commemorative ceremony and luncheon, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Baekyang-ro Renovation Project, and an alumni reunion. Around 2,000 people, including alumni, faculty, and embassy ambassadors, joined in the festivities marking Yonsei’s history and affirming its vision for the future. In his speech, President Jeong Kap-young said: “We have seen the seeds sown by our founding fathers 128 years ago—their sacrifices and their vision—flower and bloom more than 100 times over. We are grateful for God’s guidance and His amazing providence.” President Jeong also highlighted the primary achievements of Yonsei’s “Third Educational Founding”: the opening of the Yonsei International Campus (YIC) in Songdo, Incheon; the introduction of the Residential Campus (RC) system; the promotion of cutting-edge, convergence-based education and research; the development of campus infrastructure, including the Baekyang-ro Renovation Project; and the G10 Project. Through these efforts, he explained, “we have prepared the foundations to become a globally recognized university.” President Jeong added: “Through the ‘Third Educational Founding,’ Yonsei has taken another step towards become a world-class university, one that will be a leading innovator, bringing positive and long-lasting changes to Korea, Asia, and the world.” He also pledged: “With our determination to become Asia’s preeminent global university, Yonsei will continue to pursue excellence in research and education, upholding its mission of excellentia cum dignitate.” At the commemorative ceremony, awards were given out recognizing lifetime service to Yonsei, social contributions, medical service, and scholarly achievement. The Truth Award for social contributions by an individual was awarded to Lim Chae-yeon (mother of Jeong Jae-wook, a sophomore majoring in Child and Family Studies), while the Yonsei Gospel Mission received the group award. The Freedom Award, also for social contributions, was awarded to Jeong Moon-ho, a senior majoring in Political Science. Huh Jeong, who graduated from Yonsei’s medical school in 1962, received the medical service award. Professors Choi Jeong-hae (Marketing, School of Business), Song Jae-hwan (Biochemistry), and Baek Soon-gu (Internal Medicine, Wonju) were given scholarly achievement awards for their work, respectively, in the social sciences, natural sciences, and medical sciences.
