Each year, Yonsei seniors who have completed 1,000 hours or more of volunteer work are awarded the Yonsei Service Medal at a ceremony presided over by Yonsei’s president. The Yonsei Volunteer Center bestows this award to recognize the volunteer efforts of exceptional Yonseians and to encourage more students to give back to the community. Other programs run by the Volunteer Center are Dream Start, a teaching and learning program for students from low-income families, and the Major Search Program, in which Yonseians mentor local high school students, helping them to determine the university major that most interests them. This year’s recipients of the Yonsei Service Medal are Kim Ji-un (Political Science), with 1,518 hours of volunteer work, and Heo Su-hyeon (Nursing), with 2,216 hours. Through the Korea Student Aid Foundation’s Mid-Term Overseas Volunteer Activities Program, and with support from the Activities of Public Interest Law, Kim Ji-un created a four-month long Korean language and culture program for Thai students at Siam University and Wat Pradu Primary School in Bangkok. A nursing major, Heo Su-hyeon spent nine months in the Camphill Community Glencriag in the United Kingdom, learning about this organization’s systematic approach to supporting the physically impaired and mentally disabled. In 2012, she was also awarded the 7th Yonsei Community Service Award.
