Han Hyuk-kyu, who was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in the third grade, is now a Yonsei freshman in the Department of Sociology. Causing general muscle wasting and mobility impairment due to the degeneration of spinal nerve cells, SMA has left Hyuk-kyu largely confined to a wheelchair; nevertheless, with his exceptional willpower, he has refused to let his physical impairment prevent him from having a rich and full life. In addition to his excellent grades in high school, Hyuk-kyu earned a perfect score on the Korean Language and Literature section of the College Scholastic Ability Test, known as the su-neung in Korean. Although it takes him longer than most students to take notes, he looks forward to meeting the intellectual challenges provided by a Yonsei education. Hyuk-kyu says that after earning a degree in sociology he hopes to become a social critic, publishing his writing in blogs and other interactive media. Despite his fierce determination, Hyuk-kyu would likely not have been able to make it into Yonsei without the loving support of his parents, Mr. Han Keung-hee, who will continue to drive him to school every morning, and Mrs. Kim Hyang-suk, who recalls crying with joy at Hyuk-kyu’s middle school graduation. On February 14th, Mr. Han and his son visited President Jeong Kap-young, with whom they shared stories and perspectives. Mr. Han also met with Dr. Son Bong-su, Vice-President for Student Affairs and Services. At this meeting, Mr. Han told Dr. Son how impressed he had been with the student orientation organized by the Yonsei Able Center in early February. In particular, he was moved by Dr. Son’s call for all Yonseians, students and faculty alike, to learn about sharing and caring from Yonsei’s physically impaired community.
