On January 23rd, Yonsei University organized a workshop for teachers at 481 high schools in remote regions around the country where resources are relatively scarcer. The workshop provided information about the entrance procedures. The workshop is a reflection of Yonsei University’s continuous efforts to reach out to those neglected in our society by providing equal opportunities to outstanding students in remote regions. In 2006, Yonsei set up a new admission category for students from less fortunate families and, since then, began giving those accepted through this system a full 4-year scholarship. In 2010, 2011 and 2012, Yonsei also held a campaign – “Come to Yonsei, Let’s Go Out to the World” – aimed at students in schools that have never had a student continue on to study at Yonsei. Yonsei invited teachers from 481 high schools – a third of some 1,600 high schools in regional areas in Korea – to the workshop. Among them, over 60% had not had a single student become a Yonseian in the last 3 years. At the workshop, the teachers are informed about the recent entrance procedures, the changes in the educational environment and possible future developments. It provides a place where the university and high schools can exchange information and converse increasing understanding between them while also resolving differences between schools in the city and in the countryside. This year’s workshop included presentations by officials at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Korean Council for University Education.
