Among the numerous organizations at Yonsei University that adhere to servant leadership, the school’s Christian spirit, there are those behind the scenes who are recognized for distinguished service. The supporters of the Underwood Commemoration Committee deserve mention in this regard. The Underwood Commemoration Committee was inaugurated in 2000 to carry on the spirit of Doctor Underwood, the founder of Yonsei, through missionary, educational, medical and social service programs. The Underwood Missionary Award is awarded to missionaries, who like Doctor Underwood, reach out to the remote places in the world and spread the word of God. The award is given annually to 2 missionaries with a 30 million won reward each. In 2010, the Underwood Missionary Fund was set up to provide donations worth 20 million won respectively for 2 individual missionaries and an additional 40 million won to a selected organization. The leading sponsor is Yonsei alumnus Jay Kyung-oh (Dongbang Food Master, CEO). He contributed a total 2.75 billion won to the Underwood Missionary Fund since 2008. He pledged a donation of 250 million won this year. The Underwood Commemoration Committee plans to launch “Underwood Global Internship Volunteer Program” in 2013 to foster the 2nd Underwood – and many more like him. The program is expected to provide opportunities for Yonsei students to visit developing countries, see the harsh realities of life and offer practical help through volunteer work. Through the program, students will be able to grow love for mankind and discover new dreams. Lee Joong-myung (Emerson Pacific Group, Chairman) donated 20 million won as a start-up fund to launch the program and promised continuous support annually matching the initial donation sum. Through his contributions, Yonsei students will learn servant leadership through hard work serving those suffering in poorer countries. The Underwood Commemoration Committee is also focusing its efforts on operating the Underwood named endowed chair system. It aims to invite a world-renowned scholar in theology to conduct research and teach at Yonsei for a semester. This system will not only raise the level of Yonsei’s theology studies, but also provide the professors and students a chance to read the current academic trends in the field. Saemoonan Presbyterian Church (Pastor Lee Soo-young, Committee member Elder Seo Won-seok) manages the fund operating this system.
