Interview with Mrs. Kim Seo-young, wife of the late Professor Sohn Bo-ki Mrs. Kim Seo-young, wife of the late Professor Sohn Bo-ki, attended the donation ceremony on Jan. 16th for the volumes of Samguk Yusa that Professor Sohn had owned and so much valued. “He believed it to be something very special to have the books,” said Mrs. Kim. She also said, “He always carried them wrapped in a cloth in his suitcase.” Mrs. Kim recalls that her husband found the books in the late 1960s. One day he said to her “I need some money,” after returning from a visit to another province with the late Professor of Seoul National University Jeong Byeong-wook. She does not know how much he paid for the books, but she does know that he had the books close to him at all times. Interested in the Silla Hwarang while he was a student at Whimun High School, Professor Sohn entered Yonhi College and majored in history. It is not surprising that he considered studies of Samguk Yusa, a detailed account of Hwarang and Nangdo, to be his lifelong undertaking. However, he ran short of time. Retiring in 1987, he planned to take on his research on Samguk Yusa in 2002 when he started his position as director of Yonsei University Museum and visiting professor. Unfortunately, he had to quit shortly after due to health problems; and he then passed away in 2010. “He had wished to present his research findings in an article and contribute it to Yonsei,” said Mrs. Kim. She added, “Although he was unable to fulfill his dream, I hope this donation will help set the platform for students and scholars to conduct his unfulfilled research.”
