Yonsei University Alumni Association (President Park Sam-gu, Chairman of Kumho Asiana Group) awarded the “2013 Proud Yonseian Award” to former Yonsei University president Kim Byung-soo and Shinsegae Group Chairman Koo Hak-seo. Chung Hyun-jong, a member of the National Academy of Arts, Republic of Korea, and Lee Bok-sil, Director of the Korean Community Volunteer Association, were named as winners of the “Honorable Alumni Award.” Kim Byung-soo, former Yonsei University president, has organized international conferences on cancer treatment and research in Korea. He actively cooperated with world-renowned scholars contributing greatly to the development of the Korean Cancer Association. Moreover, he introduced the first advanced cancer-patient registration system that has been of invaluable service to the nation’s cancer control. Koo Hak-seo, Shinsegae Group Chairman, started his career as a clerk at Samsung. He rose to the position of Chairman of Shinsegae Group gaining himself fame as “the miracle of a salary man.” In 1999, after his appointment as Chairman, he constructed the nationwide E-Mart network, opening a new era for the distribution sector in Korea. In particular, he was praised for initiating “ethical management” soon after the IMF crisis, leading Shinsegae into global growth. The “2013 Proud Yonseian Award” and “Honorable Alumni Award” ceremonies will take place at the 2013 Yonsei Alumni Night on January 8th .
