Business owners and residents of Sinchon collectively funded scholarships for Yonsei University students who despite their economic situation have not lost their motivation to study. Since 1995, “Yonsei University Sinchon Area Supporters Association,” a group consisting of some 130 Sinchon business owners, has been supporting Yonsei students. Around 185 students have received scholarships over the last 18 years. On November 21st, a ceremony was held to award the scholarships to 10 students this year. Students will each receive a scholarship worth 3 million won. One student, Kim Sa-ra, read her letter of thanks. “It is a warm gift. I will not forget this and study harder to show my gratitude.” Around a hundred business owners and employees from Yonsei University’s Oddice of External Affairs attended the ceremony to congratulate the students. Hong Bok Ki,Senior Vice President for Administration and Development, said in a congratulatory speech that, “I thank the Yonsei University Sinchon Area Supporters Association for contributing to the development of Yonsei for the last 18 years.” Choi Moon-sik (manager of Hyundai Department Sinchon branch), the Association’s president, said in the opening remarks that, “Our association is relatively smaller in scale compared to other scholarship foundations. But our interest and love for Yonsei students is incomparable.”
