On December 6th, President Jeong Kap-young was invited to give a speech at the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) in Washington. His speech was about “The Emergence of Asian Universities.” Some of the guests at the luncheon included Roderick M. Hills (Chairman and Co-Founder of Hills Program on Governance, and former Chairman of the Securities & Exchange Commission), Carla A. Hills (CSIS Counselor and Trustee), Thomas Hubbard (former US Ambassador to Korea), Donald Gross (former White House and State Department official), Patti Peterson (adviser to US Educational Policies Commission and former president of Sarah Lawrence College), David Steinberg (professor at Georgetown University) and Scott Snyder (Director of Center for U.S.-Korea Policy). President Jeong said in his speech that Yonsei University and other Asian universities are showing significant progress, but pointed out that they have to meet new expectations such as, excellence in research and education, and reduction in tuition. He also emphasized the need for autonomy and international cooperation in Asian universities in order to gain global competitiveness. He continued to explain some of the ways in which universities were reaching towards this goal beyond local competitiveness. President Jeong showed confidence in Yonsei University’s future as a leading university in the world. He mentioned projects such as the establishment of the international campus and the RC program, which are just a few of the projects under Yonsei’s internationalization plan. Roderick M. Hills, Chairman of Hills Program on Governance, led a discussion on the role of Korea in the age of globalization, the status of Asian universities and cooperation between American and Korean universities. All the participants actively shared their opinions and ideas on the issues. The participants agreed that American as well as other Western universities would seek ties with Korean universities with the changes in the global economic climate. Accordingly, they advised that Yonsei University read the current trends and prepare a timely global strategic plan. Yonsei University and CSIS Hills Program on Governance have been jointly operating the Hill's Governance Center, an affiliate of Yonsei University’s Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS), since 2002. Both schools plan to hopefully expand their collaboration to secondary education.
