A collection of poetry and prose written by Jeong Yak-jeon, elder brother of Jeong Yak-yong, was found. He was a scholar of the Realist School of Confucianism and the poems are known to have been written while he was in exile. Yonsei University Library said that it discovered some 40 poems with the name ‘Sohn Kwan’ under the titles. ‘Sohn Kwan’ was Jeong’s pen name. Among the poems, some were letters Jeong exchanged with fishermen and lumberjacks in Heuksando, and some others were those written in reply to his younger brother’s letters. The poems were preserved as a part of Jeong Yak-yong’s manuscript of Yeoyoodang-gip which was to be revealed to the public on the day of his 250th birthday. They were discovered in the process of arranging the manuscript for the event. Although there are existing works of Jeong already, such as illustrative accounts of the island’s nature, this is the first time that literary pieces have been found. Starting from October 2nd, Yonsei University Library is holding forums about ancient literature to discuss the meaning and value of Yeoyoodang-gip and the recently discovered collection of poems.
