Chae Chan-byoung, professor at Yonsei Institute of Convergence Technology at Yonsei University, is a recipient of the IEEE Outstanding Young Researcher Award given by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). IEEE Communications Society selects professors and researchers in the Asia-Pacific region who have excellent research results as Outstanding Young Researchers. This year, after a two-month evaluation, it finally announced Professor Chae Chan-byoung and 4 other researchers as the winners. Professor Chae, who received the most prestigious award in the electrical and electronic sector, has continued to research on wireless network and integrated communications, and his studies have gained wide recognition both in Korea and abroad. He was guided by Professor Robert W. Heath, Jr. at the University of Texas at Austin getting his doctorate in 3 years. While on the PhD program, he received the IEEE Dan. E. Noble Fellowship Award, the highest honor for a graduate student in communications network. In 2008, he won Gold Prize at the Humantech Thesis Contest after winning Bronze Prize previously in 1998 as the youngest person to win a prize at the contest. After he got his doctorate degree, he was on a research team led by Professor Vahid Tarok at Harvard University and later worked as a researcher at Bell Labs in New Jersey. In 2011, he became a professor at Yonsei University and attended a workshop held in Shanghai for young aspiring scientists from Korea, Japan and China in 2012 as the Korean representative in the IT sector. Professor Park is also on the editorial committee for 3 journals: IEEE Trans. on Wireless Communications, IEEE Trans. on Smart Grid, and IEEE Journal of Selected Areas in Communications. The awards ceremony for Outstanding Young Researchers will be held at the IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference held in California in December.
