Jean-Pierre Raffarin the former French Prime Minister’s special lecture On October 10th, former French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin gave a special lecture entitled ‘The World after the Economic Crisis: From a French Viewpoint.’ The lecture was part of an EU special lecture program which was hosted by the Yonsei-SERI EU Center. The former Prime Minister opened his speech with an account of the current economic situation. The economic crisis revealed the debt problems of European countries. The crisis aroused doubts about the possibility for European countries to pay their debts. Accordingly, the slowdown in growth led to both a crisis in reliability of European countries and the euro crisis. It also generated the crisis in employment. Another side of the current situation was the changes beginning to or at least promised to be undertaken. Many countries have reconfirmed their goals and plans to reinforce a new growth treaty and financial solidarity. They have developed a way to support Greek as well. The European Central Bank has strengthened the financial discipline which will develop a plan to manage the finances of each country. Mr. Raffarin foresees European countries to overcome the crisis and restore growth. He also shared his vision for the post-crisis world. Lastly, Mr. Raffarin articulated the virtues that he believes a new leader should possess. Some of them are “the competence to communicate a complex message in easy words, to enforce ideas, and to incessantly promote reforms”.
