Along with celebration of the 566th Hangul Day, the Yonsei International Hangul Writing Contest was held at the Amphitheater on Sinchon campus on October 9th. The contest, which is hosted by the Yonsei Korean Language Institute, has taken place every year since 1992. This year the contest, which consists of the two sections—poetry and essay, was attended by 2,057 international students from 67 countries. The themes for the poetry and essay writings were ‘chair’ and ‘today’, respectively. Some participants put on a bewildered look for a while, while others were found to immediately start writing. The screening, which exceeded two hours, was led by Professor Lee Kyung-hoon (Korean Language and Literature), Professor Shin Kyung-sook (English Language and Literature), poet Choi Soung-ho, and novelist Lee Hyun-soo. The best awards in the poetry and essay section went to Jua (Nigeria) and Jang An-gi (China), respectively. Each winner receives the Award of Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Award of Yonsei University President. In Jua’s poem, where Korea was likened to a chair, the writer expressed a foreigner’s ambivalence in remote, rousing, and relaxing encounters with Korean people and culture. In An-gi’s essay, the writer depicted philosophical concerns of today, in relation to those of yesterday and tomorrow. In addition, the three grand awards went to Lee Bo-ra (Panama), Fukushima Yukki (Japan), and Nguyen Trong Dao (Vietnam). Sixty four contestants were conferred with awards, including four students with the excellence award and ten with the participation award.
