[YONSEI NEWS] Yonsei Ranks No. 183 in Times Higher Education World University Rankings

Yonsei University was ranked 183rd in the 2012-2013 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, jumping from last year’s range of 226~250. The rankings were based on the five main elements: emphasis on education (30%), research outcome (30%), journal article citation (30%), level of internationalization (7.5%), and technology transfer income (2.5%). The Times Higher Education Rankings are renowned to give put more emphasis on research paper-related elements which are achieved higher by those universities with powerful science and engineering departments. According to a relative evaluation (with the 1st ranking university accorded 100 points), Yonsei University received 48.3 points in emphasis on education, 50.6 points in research outcome, 48.6 points in journal article citation, 33.4 points in level of internationalization, and 56.1 points for technology transfer income. The most outstanding achievement compared to last year is the increase of 16.6 points in research outcome (last year 34 points) While all five areas show an increase in comparison to the past year, there was also an increase in the average of 48.2 points (12.6 points greater than last year’s average). Among the universities in Korea, the highest rankings include Pohang University of Science and Technology with 50th place, followed by Seoul National University (59th), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology(68th). The four universities, including Yonsei (183th), were ranked in the 200th rankings, whereas Sungkyunkwan University (201~225th) ranked higher than Korea University (226~250th). The top-ranking university was California Institute of Technology, which holds this position for two years in a row. The second place was awarded to both Stanford University and University of Oxford, followed by Harvard University (4th), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (5th), Princeton University (6th), University of Cambridge (7th), Imperial College London (8th), University of California, Berkeley (9th), and University of Chicago (10th). Among the universities in Asia, those with high rankings include Tokyo University (27th), National University of Singapore (29th), University of Hong Kong (35th), Peking University (46th), Tsinghua University (52th), and Kyoto University (54th).
