[YONSEI NEWS] Yonsei’s Two Women Golf Players Win Tournaments

Shin Ji-yai Wins Women's British Open on LPGA Tour Ryu So-yeon Wins KLPGA Hanwha Finance Classic Shin Ji-yai captured the Ricoh Women's British Open, the last tournament on the US women’s pro-golf LPGA Tour. On September 16th (local time), Shin fired a four-round total of nine-under 279 at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. Shin was the only player to finish under par at the par-72, 6,600-yard layout, despite an up-and-down final round of one-over 73 achieving a nine-stroke victory over compatriot Park In-bee. Her dominant win was aided in large part by her course-record 64 in the second round, which featured six birdies and an eagle. Shin, who got the second time winning of the tournament following the 2008 British Open, received 418,825 dollars as prize money. Shin has now won two straight LPGA tournaments in the past seven days. On September 10th, she defeated Paula Creamer (US) on the ninth playoff hole to win the Kingsmill Championship. Shin and Creamer fought to claim the title of championship which lasted 2 days. After suffering from injuries and undergoing surgery, Shin went through a slump in her career. However, the victory marked the return of the queen after almost 22 months. Ryu So-yeon, 22, winner of last year’s US Women’s Open Championship, played in her first Korean tournament this season to emerge as the winner showcasing her skills as an experienced player in foreign leagues. On September 8th, Ryu competed with other golfers to win Hanwha Finance Classic on the KLPGA tour at Golden Bay, Taean in Chungcheongnam Province. In the fourth round on the final day, Ryu recorded 4 birdies finishing 4 under 68. Ryu defeated Huh Yoon-kyung (22, Hyundai Swiss) by one stroke to gain the title and the 300 million won reward. Accordingly, she won the game hosted by her main sponsor. The victory is also her 8th in the KLGPA tour following her last victory in June 2011. Shin and Ryu are both currently seniors at Yonsei University studying Physical Education.
