In the 2012 World University Rankings that was released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) on September 11th Yonsei University ranked as the 112th best university in the world, jumping 17 places from last year’s ranking. Other major universities in Korea, including Seoul National University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) ranked 37th, 63rd, and 97th place, respectively; while Korea University and Sungkyunkwan University ranked 137th and 179th place. The four criteria for the QS World University Rankings are 1) research quality, 2) teaching quality, 3) graduate employment, and 4) global diversity of faculty and students. First, research quality consists of the number of journal citations per faculty member (20% of the total) and academic reputation (40%). The data for academic reputation is collected from 46,000 scholars worldwide by the survey question: Which 30 universities would you select as the world’s best in your field? Another criterion, teaching quality, is measured by the student-to-faculty ratio (20%); while global diversity is calculated in terms of the ratios of foreign/international students (5%) and of foreign/international faculty (5%). For graduate employment, the reputation of graduates (10%) is based on the results, attained from 28,000 global enterprisers, of the question concerning the university graduates preferred for employment. The rankings of the universities in Korea exhibited notable differences across categories. Whereas Yonsei University, along with Seoul National University, KAIST, and Korea University were highly recognized for academic reputation; POSTECH met greater standards for journal citations per faculty, a factor that represents the quality of journal articles. In addition, Hanyang University, Kyunghee University, and Sogang University gained high results in student-faculty ratio. In more detail, Yonsei earned a total of 63.5 points, which is 6.2 points greater than last year’s. Yonsei was ranked 140th place for graduate reputation and 94th place for student-faculty ratio. Yonsei also came in 83th place for academic reputation, the assessment item which constitutes 40% of the whole, moving up 27 places from last year’s ranking. In the rankings of academic disciplines, social science and management was ranked 69th place—an increase of 16 rankings; while the humanities and art sector was 80th, biological science 112th, natural science 130th, and technology and engineering was ranked 136th place. According to the World University Rankings, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was ranked 1st place, followed by Cambridge University, Harvard University, University College London, and Oxford University. As the same as last year, the top 100 rankings included three universities in Korea; while there was an increase from five to six universities in Korea in the top 200 rankings. In the rankings of 2007, only Seoul National University and KAIST were in the top 200, but in five years this number has increased to six.
