During winter break, Yonseians carried out the act of sharing and serving others. Yonsei University Volunteer Center(Director Kim Jae-yeop)’s “Expedition of Hope” spread the warmth of Yonseians to regions across the country as well as regions in Vietnam that have poor educational facilities. Engineering Education Innovation Center and Volunteer Center carried out volunteer activities at Food for the Hungry Korea-Vietnam Job Training Center in Vinh Phuc Province, Haidong Social Welfare Center and Hanoi Nguyen Viet Xuan Elementary School (NVX Elementary School). The 24-member Engineering Education Innovation Center team (led by Professor Yoon Dae-hee) and the 17-member Volunteer Center team taught calligraphy and balloon art and organized bubble shows for orphaned students at NVX Elementary School and the disabled at Haidong Social Welfare Center. They also visited farmers participating in the ‘TYM (‘I love you’) Fund’ microloan project to see how the TYM Fund is helpful to them. Furthermore, they participated in horticulture that aims to increase agricultural incomes. It was an opportunity for the students to bond with Vietnamese students from ULSA through cultural exchange as well. Yoo Ji-sung (Economics), a member of the Expedition, said, “The experience in Vietnam was not the end, but yet another beginning for me. After the volunteer service in Vietnam, I realized that I received much more from them than what I gave them. The pureness of the children and the generosity of the local farmers made me think about the things that I forgot in life and how I should lead my life from now on. My idea about volunteering was self-centered, questioning “What can I give to other people?” It was a one-way giving process. This experience made me consider what the other person may be thinking first in the future.” Meanwhile, Vietnam “Expedition of Hope” team delivered a gift of joy to children at NVX Elementary School in the form of a computer sent by Yonsei Gospel Missionary Group.
