85-year-old elder brother donates one hundred million KRW to Yonsei, his brother’s alma mater 85-year-old Mr. Jeong Han-seok pulled out his younger brother’s physics notebook from an old leather bag. Tears welled up in his eyes, while Mr. Jeong started the long-time untold story: “This bag was a present to my brother. He was admitted to Yonsei University. I felt proud to see my brother leave the house to go to school. Only two weeks later, the Korean War broke out; so he didn’t get to use the bag that long.” Mr. Jeong’s story about his brother became known to the public just before he visited Yonsei on December 28th last year to donate one hundred million KRW to the development fund of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. As the eldest among three sons and two daughters, Mr. Jeong especially cared for his brother Yong-seok. While Mr. Jeong himself worked at a bank after graduating Cheongju Commercial High School, he worked hard to let his brother receive university education. In 1950, after graduating the same high school as his brother, Yong-seok entered the Department of Chemical Engineering at Yonsei University. Mr. Jeong made the money for tuition even by trading his important suit at the pawnshop. “Paying tuitions was difficult for the whole family, but I was very proud of Yong-seok. He dispelled my sorrows,” said Mr. Jeong. Unfortunately, these happy times were too ephemeral. After the war broke out, Yong-seok was forced to be relocated to North Korea while Mr. Jeong was sent to a different city for evacuation. Since then, Mr. Jeong has been contacting and visiting government and private organizations in futile attempt to find any information about Yong-seok. Mr. Jeong still cleans Yong-seok’s belongings and cuts out every newspaper article on separated families. So that Yong-seok has no problem finding home, Mr. Jeong has been living in the same house in Seongbuk-gu for fifty years. Meanwhile, Mr. Jeong has soothed his sorrow of having not been able to support his brother with educating other siblings and his own children. They have all graduated eminent universities either in Korea or overseas. Mr. Jeong says, “I believe that making this donation is the last thing I can do for Yong-seok. Even if I do not meet him, I hope his children one day will be able to find their father’s trace at Yonsei University”.
