The Four Professors Designated as Underwood-Avison Distinguished Scholar On November 8th, the designation of Underwood-Avison Distinguished Professor was conferred on four professors—Professor Chang Yong-sung (Economics), Cheon Jin-woo (Chemistry), Myoung Jae-min (Materials Science and Engineering), and Seo Jin-seok (Medical Imaging Laboratory)—by Yonsei University. The Underwood-Avison Distinguished Professor is an honorable title given to scholars who are making decisive contributions to mankind’s development by means of global-standard education, research, and service. Appointed scholars acquire significant support for their research, including an incentive of 90 million KRW over three years and a three-credit reduction from the faculty lecture responsibilities. * 2011 Underwood Distinguished Scholar: Professor Chang Yong-sung (Economics) Successful Effort to Host the 2013 SED at Yonsei Professor Chang Yong-sung has been re-nominated as Underwood Distinguished Professor after his first designation in 2008. He is vice-editor of Journal of Monetary Economics, a prominent journal in macroeconomics, and editorial board member of American Economic Journal, which is published by the American Economic Association. Over the past 11 years, Professor Chang has published 16 SSCI articles, including four in American Economic Review, one of the most respected scholarly journals in the economics profession. His study on Multi-Households and the Dynamic General Equilibrium Model is not only well-known to global scholars and Nobel Prize winners, but also is required reading for doctoral students in leading graduate programs as in the University of Chicago, Princeton University, and Yale University. Professor Chang has also led the successful effort to host the 2013 Society of Economic Dynamics (SED) at Yonsei University. *2011 Underwood Distinguished Scholar: Professor Cheon Jin-woo (Chemistry) Six Articles Published in the Top 3% IF-Ranked Journals Professor Cheon Jin-woo’s position as Underwood Distinguished Scholar was renewed due to his excellence in academic service and research. As an international scholar in nanomedicine, a field of interdisciplinary convergence, Professor Cheon formulated the Nano-Scaling Law/Nano Material Roadmap and is editor-in-chief of Accounts of Chemical Research, a world-renowned scientific journal published by the American Chemical Society, and fellow of the British Royal Chemical Society. He has also published six journals in the top 3% Impact Factor (IF) score journals. * 2011 Underwood Distinguished Scholar: Professor Myoung Jae-min (Materials Science and Engineering) 200 Published Articles & 30 Applied/Registered Patents Professor Myoung Jae-min has been newly appointed as Underwood Distinguished Scholar this year. He has carried out research on semiconductor nanomaterial synthesis and electric device fabrication. He has published 200 articles in a number of prestigious journals that include Nano Letters, Advanced Materials, and ACS Nano; and has 30 applied/registered patents associated with his research. In 2008, Professor Myoung served as general manager of the Industry and Technology Development Project implemented by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, seeking to facilitate the transfer and commercialization of technology from research institutions and to promote technology exchange and commercialization through industry-academic joint research. In 2009, his research proposal was approved by the National Research Foundation of Korea as one of the World Class University (WCU) projects. * 2011 Avison Distinguished Scholar: Professor Seo Jin-seok (Medical Imaging Laboratory) Extensive Research on Early Detection of Cancer and Therapeutic Efficacy Professor Seo Jin-seok conduct studies on customized treatment, early detection of cancer, and the therapeutic efficacy of the earlier detection and treatment of specialized manifestation. Another major field of his research is nanomedical convergence, in which magnetic resonance imaging is expanded to molecular imaging and nanomaterials are applied and engineered. As a founder of the Convergence Institute of Medicine, Professor Seo does research on nano new medicine which includes diagnosis kit, medical equipment, and contrast medium. In addition to his 150 published articles, including one in Nature Medicine which was cited over 400 times, Professor Seo’s work has been cited more than 2500 times. In 2007, he was the winner of both Korea’s Top Scientist Award, given by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology and the Yonsei Academic Award. Professor Seo is striving for the development of convergence research as a participant scholar in the Yonsei Global 5-5-10 project and as a senior researcher of the Yonsei Nanomedical National Core Research Center.
