The 1st Yonsei Institute of Convergence Technology (YICT) Forum was held at the International campus on October 17th under the theme “Convergence of Nano-Bio-Energy with IT for Smart Systems”. Attended by world-famous scholars, the forum created a platform for open discussion on creative research for future smart systems and the pathway to consilience education. Invited speakers include winner of the Hoam Prize and pioneer in bio-nano-energy, Emeritus Professor Luke Lee (UC Berkeley); innovator in optical science and three-dimension storage devices, Professor Bert Hesselink (Stanford University); three-time nominee of Scientific American 50 top technology leaders, Stan Williams (Senior Fellow and Director at Hewlett Packard Laboratories); pioneer in molecule electronics, Professor Hongkun Park (Harvard University); expert in piezoelectrics who constructed the roadmap of nanogenerator for energy harvesting, Emeritus Professor Zhong-Lin Wang (Georgia Institute of Technology); and leading researcher in nano-material including biomimetic templated crystal growth, Professor Boaz Pokroy (Technion - Israel Institute of Technology). After the speeches, a panel discussion on the future direction of convergence education and research was held with the approximately 190 forum attendees, including Yonsei University students and faculty, and business people from Incheon city and neighboring areas. The YICT Institute plans to hold annual forums related to the five YICT laboratories—Smart Interface, Smart Transportation, Smart Living, Smart City & Energy, and Computational Culture, serving as a locus for development of convergence research in both academia and business industry.
