Yonsei University’s Research Institute for Earth and Environmental Science and NASA came to an agreement on June 21st to collaborate on detecting aerosol-driven climate change using the AERONET and calibrating and validating measurements from artificial satellites. The agreement was signed by Jeon Haeyoung, head of the Research Institute, and Karen Feldstein, external relations director for the NASA headquarter. The Research Institute for Earth and Environmental Science and the AERONET project team led by Brent Hoben of NASA co-hosted an international workshop last March. Yonsei was given a measuring instrument, which enabled the school to start measuring the optical properties of aerosol. The instrument was installed at the rooftop of the Science Hall and the site was given a station name “Yonsei University” (http://aeronet.gsfc.nasa.gov/new_web/photo_db/Yonsei_University.html). Based on these ties, the Institute plans to hold large-scale DRAGON measurement campaigns with NASA next year in Seoul and other regions in Korea. This initiative is expected to create the calibration and validation basis for the satellite business of the Ministry of Environment.
