Extensive collection of his writings and editorials Oesol Choi Hyun Bae, scholar and “godfather of Korean Language studies” (1894-1970), was an innovative visionary. Although he lived in the time when Chinese characters were lingua franc of Korea—to the point that names were written in Chinese characters only, he deeply believed that “for Korean people to properly advance, they need to leave Chinese letters and use Korean and Hangul instead.” From as early as 1920, despite criticisms, he emphasized using Korean and Hangul. In 1960s, when he was a venerated elderly scholar, he developed passion for using typewriter. Again, he was a visionary and foresaw that “for Korean language to evolve in the future and to be recognized globally, using machines is absolutely necessary.” He encouraged using typewriter and machine system research to his students. Yonsei University celebrates 564th Hangul Anniversary this year and planned to publish a collection of Scholar Oesol’s lifetime achievements, researches, and life. The Publishing and Culture Institute (Director Kim Ha-soo) will publish, in collaboration with the Oesol Society, the first collection of 25 books which includes Oesol’s precious works such as “Hangul Bon”, “Hangul Garl”, and “The Way of Reinvention of the Korean People”. Moreover, Yonsei University Museum and Rare Books Department of the Library will contribute their discoveries of Oesol’s original hand written documents and first edition research papers and books. This is a first attempt to publish such extensive and original works by Oesol. The Publishing and Culture Institute also has plans to complete the second part of the collection, which will compile his works on Korean Language Teaching theories and methods, and the third part of the collection, which will consist of newspaper editorials and broadcast manuscripts, and other media manuscripts. Oesol was born in Oolsan and received teachings from Joo Si-kyoung at Chosun Language Institute in 1910. Afterwards, Oesol studied Modern Education Studies at Japan’s Kyoto Imperial University (Kyoto University) from 1922. Returning to Korea after his studies, Oesol taught at Yonhee College (former Yonsei University) and realized that spreading scientific Hangul was absolutely necessary to educate people effectively and quickly. Oesol then devoted his life to teaching and researching Hangul. He established basis for spelling unification and grammar categorization of Hangul and in 1937, published Complete Hangul Grammar, establishing the grammar for Hangul in its entirety.
