[YONSEI NEWS] Shanghai Jiaotong University Ranks Yonsei as Nation’s Top Private University

: In the World Rankings, Yonsei ranks 210th ; in computer science area, Yonsei ranks 99th in the world During the past five years Yonsei University has been moving upward in the academic rankings of world universities and is very close to entering the threshold of the world’s top 100 universities. On August 13th, Shanghai Jiaotong University (China) published its rankings of worldwide universities, and Yonsei University was ranked as 210th place in the academic rankings of world’s top 500 universities. This is a straight move upward from 230th place last year, and from 252nd in 2006. In fact, during the past five years, Yonsei University’s rank in the academic world has been on upward move. Other Korean universities ranked in high places as well. KAIST and Korea University were ranked as the 3rd and 4th top universities in Korea, respectively. Yonsei was also ranked as the 28th best university in the Asian university ranking. In the area of Computer Science, Yonsei was ranked as 99th in the world—proof of its contribution to the development of Computer Science in Korea. The title of the Top University of the World went to Harvard University, followed by the University of California, Berkeley. American universities held 54 places in the top 100 rankings; while Cambridge University and Oxford University were ranked 5th and 10th place, respectively. Furthermore, Switzerland’s Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and France’s Pierre and Marie Curie University took 23rd and 39th place. And in Asia, Japan’s Tokyo University ranked the highest with 20th place, followed by Kyoto University (24th), Osaka University (75th), Nagoya University (79th), and Tohoku University (84th). Shanghai Jiaotong University evaluates the ranking criteria based on achievements and research publication data of faculty, teaching staff, professors, and alumni achievement data such as research, internationally recognized awards, research fellows, published journal articles and research papers, etc. Yonsei University’s rise to the top rankings started since 2007. In 2007, Yonsei ranked 96th in publishing SCI research papers. In 2008, Yonsei ranked as 200th in the rankings of the Taiwanese Higher Education Evaluation Committee, and in 2009 Yonsei ranked 151st in the Times’ world universities evaluation. Yonsei ranked 19th in Asia in 2010 Chosun Ilbo-QS Asia University Evaluation.
