2009 Yonsei-Waseda Volunteer Activities in Rural Areas and Peace Debate are held from August 4 to August 15 in various regions near the Civilian Control Line near DMZ. The program, where students from both universities help the victims of land mine casualties and think about the importance of peace, is entering its third year. Students do volunteer works together at the scenes of Korean War battles and take time to share thoughts on peace. Within the current context of the rising tension between Korea and Japan regarding Dokdo and history textbook issues, the program sets a stepping stone for the future by strengthening a deeper understanding of each country. Some 30 students from both universities will participate in the program, along with Professor Jo Jae-guk from Yonsei, Visiting Lecturer Komine-san from Waseda University Hirayama Ikuo Volunteer Center, Executive Secretary Mun Eun-young from Korea Campaign to Ban Landmines and other staffs.
