Conference on 'End of the World as We Know it' An international conference “The End of the World as We Know It: War, Representation, and Memory” on was held at Sangnam Hall from June 3 to 5. The conference was co-organized by Department of English BK 21 of Yonsei University and Center for the Humanities in Washington University in St. Louis. The agenda of the interdisciplinary conference was to examine various problems related to war the world has faced from different perspectives. Professor Gerald Early (Washington University) gave the keynote speech on the process of legalization of American presidential memoranda in 1948 that directed the abolishment of racial discrimination. He said, “the change of military policy of the period happened in conjunction with cultural, political change in the United States of America.” He also explained that the change in foreign policy of the period implies the possibility that "small wars" would function as a common ideology that unites multi-ethnic countries in the future. There were also other sessions dealt with variety of issues: Professor James Dawes (Macalester College) examined the problem of war crimes. He claimed, “confession and statements about war crimes such as torture, civil genocide, medical experimentation are in urgent demand to help complete morality of the twentieth century.” Professor Helen Lee (Yonsei University) explored the representation of war in Japanese mass culture through her paper on the “Ghost of Yamato.” Professor Lee analyzed that the battleship Yamato in Japanese manga and anime is a representation of Japan, which tries to embrace painful memories of loss.
