Students of the Underwood International College (UIC) are using their superb language skills to teach English to children in the community. At UIC, 400 students, including 88 students from 22 countries, are studying to become global leaders of the future. UIC students created a volunteer group called “Giving Tree” in order to provide service to the community by teaching English. The Giving Tree has been tutoring elementary school students in economic hardship since October. The group participates in the English mentoring class “I Love School” and provides programs in English conversation, pronunciation, vocabulary, puzzles, and other areas. In comparison to other English education volunteers, they provide both individual and group instruction in order to resolve both the need for individual attention and social skills in these children. UIC plans to develop various programs to encourage community service and add a community service course to the curriculum.
