Professors Chang Yongsung, Lee Myongsoo, Cheon Jinwoo, Lee Young-Wook, Kim Do-Hyang, Kim Young-Joon, Kim Young-Min Seven professors were named Underwood Professors to represent the Yonsei community through their world-class research and publications: Chang Yongsung (Economics), Lee Myongsoo (Chemistry), Cheon Jinwoo (Chemistry), Lee Young-Wook (Astronomy), Kim Do-Hyang (Metallurgical System Engineering), Kim Young-Joon (Biochemistry), and Kim Young-Min (Wonju Korean Language and Literature). Last year, Yonsei appointed the first group of Underwood Professors: Kim Dongho (Chemistry), Kim Jeong-Han (Mathematics), Lee Su-Houng (Physics), and Lee Hyun-Cheol (Internal Medicine). For the second year of the professorship, the appointed professors were divided into three groups and given incentives of 90 million won in research funds for three years. The appointments were made on November 26. Professor Chang Yongsung, Economics Department, College of Business and Economics Professor Chang has published a total of 14 articles in SSCI-level journals in the past eight years, including three articles in American Economics Review, the top journal in the field. Some of his recent research publications are widely recognized around the world and have been introduced into the curriculum of doctoral programs in universities such as the University of Chicago, Princeton, and Yale. Professor Lee Myongsoo, Chemistry Department, College of Science Professor Lee is considered to have established new interdisciplinary areas by introducing synthetic organic materials to other fields. He has demonstrated that there are no definite boundaries between chemistry and biology by showing that it is possible to control biological functions by combining technology and life science. Professor Lee is on the editorial board of prestigious international chemistry journals. Professor Cheon Jinwoo, Chemistry Department, College of Science Professor Cheon not only established the principle of chemical planning and measurement in nano-science, but is also considered the pioneer of interdisciplinary efforts using nano-technology. He stands at the forefront of research in nano-medicine and nano-energy. He ranks among the top one percent internationally in article citation. He is a board member of the British Royal Society of Chemistry, and a member of the U.S. NIH nano-cancer cure program. Professor Lee Young-Wook, Astronomy Department, College of Science Professor Lee has led the academic world in the research of the creation and evolution of galaxies, and holds the Korean record for articles published in Nature and Science, with a lifetime total of 210 published articles and 4,500 citations. He is also the first Korean scientist to participate in a NASA project, the GALEX, an orbiting telescope that uses ultraviolet light to observe galaxies. Professor Kim Do-Hyang, Metallurgical System Engineering Department, College of Engineering Professor Kim has published 230 articles in SCI journals of his field, and have given over 50 lectures in major conferences. In 1998, he established his own research team and has successfully conducted and facilitated creative research projects. Currently, Professor Kim is the director of the Global Research Center and National Defense Nano-Application Research Center. Professor Kim Young-Joon (Biochemistry Department, College of Life Science and Biotechnology Professor Kim has done research on the complex network of the immune system by looking at the relationship between the various signal systems in immune system cells in highly developed animals. He has especially been recognized for reinterpreting traditional laws of genetics by proposing that acquired genetic traits have an important role in the development of organisms and illnesses through reversible genetic formulas. Professor Kim Young-Min, Korean Language and Literature Department, College of Humanities and Arts, Wonju Campus Professor Kim is considered to have upgraded the level of scholarship in modern Korean Literature through his books. His research methods are considered very innovative due to his endless efforts to discover new documents and conduct detailed research based on meticulous analysis of documents and texts, based on which he moves on to proposing new frames of Korean literary history. Professor Kim has also been incredibly influential in his efforts to introduce media studies into the field. In 2007, he was selected as national scholar in the humanities by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Research Foundation
