Proposed by Yonsei President at Korea University Lecture Yonsei University President Kim Han-Joong visited Korea University on December 3 to give a lecture entitled “Beautiful Dreams.” “Individuals and organizations that do not dream cannot move forward,” said President Kim at the opening of his lecture. “If you always keep your dream in your heart and try to achieve it, your dream will come true.” President Kim’s lecture was part of the presidential lecture exchange scheme signed by the two universities. Last month, Korea University President Lee Ki-Su had visited Yonsei. President Kim quoted Dr. Martin Luther King in his speech on the importance of beautiful dreams. “Dr. King’s dream for a society free from racial discrimination has been realized 40 years later with Barack Obama’s election as president of the U.S.” The Seven Paths to Realizing Your Dreams President Kim discussed seven ways of realizing these beautiful dreams. “Love passionately,” “Look up at the sky,” “Become a true professional in your field,” “Find a mentor in your life,” and “Study English in order to communicate with the world” were some of the things he suggested. He put special emphasis on reading, contemplation, and writing. Sharing the essay “We are a Team” by Shin Woo-Cheol, Korean marathoner Lee Bong-Ju’s training partner, President Kim asked the students to find a friend, teacher, or any other type of mentor in your life, and make three true friends who will be loyal to you to the end. After a lecture full of wit and humor, President Kim enthralled the audience by ending with a song on dreams. Singing with the Students During his lecture, President Kim made a surprise proposal for a dual-degree program, where students would be able to earn degrees from both Yonsei and Korea University. “The Ministry of Education is changing its policies to acknowledge dual-degrees among universities in Korea. If the two universities work together, we will be able to stand with the greatest in the world. I would like to open our new Songdo Campus to students from Korea University.” A question session was held after the lecture. When asked by a student preparing for the bar exam about how to prepare for a life-long career, he humorously responded, “Start with the bar exam.” On a more serious note, he added, “My daughter, who is a graduate of the Yonsei Department of Law, is one of the many people struggling to make a career in law. I always feel sorry for her for having advised her to take that career path.”
