[YONSEI NEWS] Missionaries Kim Seong-Gwang and Lee Gee-Jeh Awarded the Underwood Missionary Award

Kim Seong-Gwang: 25 Years in Paraguay, Opening Churches and Establishing Mission School On October 23, the Eighth Underwood Missionary Awards were presented to the Rev. Kim Seong-Gwang (57), a missionary in Paraguay, and Lee Gee-Jeh, a missionary in Bolivia. The Underwood Missionary Award is presented annually to missionaries devoting themselves to their calling in areas in and outside of Korea. It was established in 2001 to commemorate the spirit of Yonsei founder Underwood. Rev. Kim was recognized for his efforts in Paraguay, where he has worked for 25 years, building churches and opening mission schools. He visits seven churches in Paraguay and built a new church in the area. Rev. Kim is also especially interested in education, establishing a kindergarten in 1990, grade school in 1991, middle school in 2000, and high school in 2001.. Lee Gee-Jeh: 22 Years in Bolivia, Providing Education and Medical Service Rev. Lee has been in Bolivia for 22 years, working in various mission areas. He established churches in many remote areas and also established seminaries in Bolivia. Rev. Lee is also interested in cultural and medical mission work, establishing a medical missionary group and publishing religious textbooks and hymnbooks as well as textbooks for believers. Before the award ceremony, Yonsei Yongjae Chair Professor Lee Man-Yeol lectured on the subject of “Underwood’s Life and Achievements”. Yonsei President Kim Han-Joong also gave a speech for the event. “Through Rev. Kim and Rev. Lee, who are giving their lives to show the love of God in remote areas, I was able to feel that passion of Underwood come alive again. I sincerely thank the two missionaries who have truly realized the missionary spirit of Underwood.”
