Construction of the Yonsei University Songdo Global Academic Complex will begin on November 26 with a groundbreaking ceremony. The 614,000㎡ Complex will house the Yonsei Songdo Campus, branch campuses of Yonsei’s sister universities from around the world, and various research centers. The Incheon Department of Economy and Yonsei University plan to complete construction by 2012 and open the complex in March of the same year. The Complex will hold 3,000 domestic students, 1,000 international students, 500 faculty members, and 500 researchers. The expenses will be recovered by profit from land development. Yonsei is the process of collaborating with University of California, Berkeley to open a branch campus there and with the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center to establish a joint research center. An official of Incheon Department of Economics reported high hopes for the complex. “The Complex is expected to raise global recognition of the Incheon Economic Zone, increase production by 3.8 trillion won, and create 52,000 jobs.”
