The Total Amount of Scholarships Given by Yonsei University Last Year Ranked First Place in Korea. National Assembly member Kwon Young-ghil of the Democratic Labor Party reported that according to an analysis of the information he obtained from the Ministry of Education regarding the tuition remission and student population of each university, Yonsei University ranked in the first place with a total of 68.8 billion won given out as scholarships. The analysis also included information in the criteria for scholarships, such as GPA, economic hardship, student employees, student association leaders, etc. In the case of Yonsei, scholarships for students in economic hardship took up a considerable portion of the total scholarships. Yonsei University has worked to create a safety net to prevent qualified students from experiencing difficulty in their education due to economic circumstances. Since 2004, Yonsei scholarships were changed to need-based scholarships to help students in difficult situations rather than merely reward students with good grades. In 2005, Yonsei became the first university in Korea to give full tuition remissions to students struggling with harsh financial conditions. To realize the dream of the Yonsei community that any Yonseian should be given a chance to study without worrying about tuition, Yonsei will continue to create the best possible scholarship policies, actively collect donations, and distribute scholarships in a reasonable manner.
