Yonsei University plans to make the Songdo Global Academic Complex (scheduled for completion in 2010) truly global by inviting internationally acclaimed academic institutions. The first step of this plan was signing an academic exchange agreement with UC-Berkeley in February 2007. This agreement proposes the creating of the “UC-Berkeley Asia Education Base”, and part of this project involves the “Yonsei-Berkeley Team-Teaching Program” which was introduced in Spring 2008. The Yonsei-Berkeley Team-Teaching Program is a team-teaching format where 10 full-time professors from Yonsei University work with 10 Berkeley professors to provide 11 courses in which the professors from each school will lecture together for a certain period during the semester. UC-Berkeley was established in 1868 and was the first campus to open among the ten campuses of the University of California. Berkeley houses the UC headquarters. The university is also known for its academic excellence and the high quality of the research produced by its faculty, and its graduate school is considered to be one of the best in the U.S. along with private institutions such as Harvard and Stanford. The Yonsei-Berkeley Team-Teaching Program will give Yonsei students a chance to learn from the outstanding faculty of Berkeley. It is expected to function as the stepping stone to further cooperation between the two universities and the establishment of Songdo as the center of global education in Asia.
