Yonsei Rehabilitation School Yonsei University has led the Korean society for the past 123 years, not only by producing outstanding leaders as the finest private university in Korea, but also by leading the community in supporting the weak and neglected. Special admission divisions for these groups and various scholarship opportunities are examples that can be found within the university, while the Yonsei Volunteer Group and other community service efforts reach out to the entire community. An important part of Yonsei’s efforts is the special education facility for disabled children. The Yonsei Rehabilitation School is Korea’s first private special education facility which was established by Yonsei in 1964 for the education and rehabilitation of disabled children. The establishment of this institution was significant at the time, for the level of awareness regarding such matters was still very low. It was the Yonsei spirit of consideration and love for our neighbors that led to such a project. Under its motto of “Love, Health, and Independence”, the Rehabilitation School focuses on helping students to become physically healthy, show love toward each other, and grow into independent beings. Especially important are the educational therapy that helps students with severe and multiple disabilities overcome their disabilities, develop their potentials and attain communication ability. For 43 years, the school used 13 classrooms in the Severance Hospital, but the dedication ceremony for the new school building was held on May 29, opening a new page for the school. The new building, which is located within the Yonsei Sinchon Campus, is a five-story building which measures at 54,615 ft². Each classroom has separate restrooms and the school’s facilities included a top-grade ventilation system. Currently, 74 students of various levels from kindergarten to second-year middle school students attend the school. The school plans to add one story each year until it will be able to provide education up to the final year of high school by 2012.
