Opens Up Possibility of Creating Nano-Particles for Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Professor Cheon Jinwoo (Chemistry) and his research team have developed a device which can predict activity of the magnetic nano-particles according to size, shape, and composition. The research results were published in the February issue of Accounts of Chemical Research, a well-known journal in the world of chemistry. The team is also working on domestic and international patents. “Through what we are doing,” Professor Cheon explained, “it is possible to make great leaps in nano-medical technololgy and also develop nano-particles which are necessary for MRI cancer diagnosis, high-temperature cancer treatment, and data storage.” For example, if a certain nano-matter optimal for MRI scanning is produced, this can double the performance of MRI scans, making cancer diagnosis much easier. Also, if specially manufactured nano-particles are used, heat that is five times as intense can be produced to kill cancerous cells. Named Among “Fourteen Korean Scientists Who Are Shaping the Future” Professor Cheon was included in the list of 14 scientists who are shaping the future. This list was compiled by the Ministry of Science and Technology and consists of scientists who have published articles in the top journals of their field and resolved important questions of the scientific world. Professor Cheon was recognized for his work with the MEIO(Magnetism Engineered Iron Oxide) nano-particle which opened a new frontier in the world of nano-medicine. Accounts of the lives and research of the selected scientists were published in a book entitled “Korean Scientists Who Are Shaping the Future”.
