“I was impressed once again by the tremendous development of Yonsei.” About thirty directors of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (a foundation for higher Christian education in Asia, UB) visited Yonsei university. President Jung Chang-Young opened with a dinner at the Grand Hilton Diamond Room on November 13th at 6pm to welcome the UB directors where he delivered plaques of thanks. The President showed his deep appreciation for supporting Yonsei's development for half a century since 1950, and Patricia Stranahan, the representative of the UB, replied they were proud of the fact they could be of any contribution for such a great university. The UB directors participated in the “Luce Chapel Won Il-han Hall” ceremony which was held on November 14th at 10am. After the ceremony, the group of visitors praised Yonsei’s progress while touring the campus. They were especially amazed by the ubiquitous environment, hi-tech medical equipment, and the quality of facilities at the main building of Severance Hospital. The UB will be strengthening its ties with Yonsei University and provide continued support to our university and the medical center. The UB was founded in the beginning of the 20th century to aid higher Christian education in Asia and has been supporting our university with scholarships, research expenses, a book budget, and foreign currency for students studying abroad, since 1950 when the economy was in difficulty. Also, the donations made from the alumni residing in America are being delivered through the UB, and there have been many continuous supporting projects such as funds to aid in research and chapel training education. One such project is the support of a “Bio-ethics curriculum establishing project” run by Professor Lee Won-Hee (College of Nursing) and Professor Son Myung-Sae (Department of Preventative Medicine), and the results of the project will be spread to numerous Asian countries including Korea, Mongolia, and China. Moving from a University that Received from the UB to One of Giving in Cooperation with the UB The UB's Honorary Director, Lee Won-Kyu Promises a 100 Thousand Dollars Donation On November 14th at 9:30 am, the Yonsei Newsletter met with alumna Lee Won-Kyu who is currently serving as a honorary director from this year after consecutively filling the position of director at the UB for the last nine years. He described the UB as an organization that has helped Christian universities in Asia for the last eighty years, and in particular Christian universities in Korea such as Yonsei and Ewha since the 1950's. Lee said “Since Yonsei has been receiving the help of the UB for the last fifty years, it is now time that Yonsei, as the top university among Asian Christian universities, took a step forward as a friend of the UB by supporting other Asian universities. And the change has already started.” He stated that Yonsei is leading the progress of Asian Christian universities. “Yonsei is actively working with the UB. For example, young professors or Christians from various Asian countries such as Mongolia, China, and Indonesia are being educated at Yonsei.” Lee is currently serving as Secretary General of the Yonsei International Foundation, which was founded by alumni in the United States to aid in Yonsei's development. He said he is planning to serve Yonsei using the know-how of fund raising from his nine year’s of experience as the director of the UB. In addition, on November 14th, Director Lee promised a 100 thousand dollar donation for the medical center and explained that the growth of Yonsei is a great pleasure and honor. Lee has donated 130 million won divided into 8 donations since 1998 to help fund the construction efforts, and has also donated one thousand dollars for the cancer hospital building last May.
