10 Years of Volunteering at the DMZ

-Yonsei and Waseda Students Organize ‘Peace Tour’

For the past decade, students from Yonsei and Waseda University in Japan have been doing volunteer work near the demilitarized zone (DMZ), offering a “Peace Tour” each summer. This year’s tour took place from August 6 to 13 in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province.

Before the tour began, on August 4, Professor Komine from Rikkyo University and Professor Myung-lim Park from Yonsei lectured, respectively, on the “Korean Peninsula and Japan in East Asian International Relations” and “How to Maintain Peace in East Asia as Global Citizens.” The next day, the students went on a fieldtrip that visited the Third Infiltration Tunnel, Imjingak, Dora Observatory, and the War and Women’s Human Rights Museum.

On August 6, the tour formally kicked off with activities that included helping farmers, hair-dyeing for the elderly, nail art, and massages. The student volunteers also worked at Dochang Elementary School, which has only nine students. There, they provided mentoring and a number of cultural activities for the young students.

Mr. Nam-gil Park, a resident of Dochang and a landmine victim, expressed his gratitude to the students of the Peace Tour: “I’m happy to see students from Korea and Japan doing volunteer work near the mine-filled demilitarized zone, which reminds us of the devastation of war and the meaning of peace.”

Professor Jae-kook Cho, president of the Peace Sharing Association, said: “I’m pleased that despite poor North-South relations, we have been acting as a bridge to promote peace and harmony at the public level.”
