Yonsei Shares Its Skills and Resources
through Volunteer Service Activities

Yonsei takes pride in fulfilling its social responsibilities by sharing its knowledge-base and resources with the community at large. Believing that community involvement is an essential component of the educational experience, Yonsei has a variety of volunteer and community service leadership programs.

Yonsei Dream Major Conductor (YDMC)

Yonsei Dream Major Conductor (YDMC) operates under the auspices of the Yonsei Volunteer Center, and its purpose is to mentor high school students who are struggling to choose a major. With forty members from a wide range of departments, the Yonsei mentors provide students with first-hand knowledge of their own major, while offering information about many other fields of study at the university. In providing future university students guidance and information, YDMC gives them the tools to more deliberately and reflectively consider what major might be right for them.

Dream Start

Dream Start was established in 2009 with the goal of mentoring young people from low-income households by helping them to build confidence and develop greater social skills and professionalism. While giving their mentees the tools to thrive academically and personally, the Dream Start mentors, in connecting with the community, gain important experiential knowledge and develop strategies for effecting meaningful social change.

Murray Volunteer Corps

Murray Volunteer Corps aims to help children of military personnel and miners in Gangwon province. The corps visits isolated areas across the country to share knowledge by holding knowledgesharing mentoring camps during school vacations. During school semesters, the volunteers visit Gangwon province including Wonju to mentor adolescents about multiculture in Korea and also to provide online knowledge-sharing. In addition to these, the corps also holds various after-school programs like drum lessons, recreation, and classical music appreciation sessions.

Yon-In Project

Yon-In Project is an academic support organization, which provides tutoring and practical learning opportunities for elementary, middle, and high school students in the Incheon area. The Yonsei volunteers are all undergraduates at the International Campus, and they enroll in a special community service course during the semester as part of the project.

Medical Volunteer Work Abroad

To honor the legacy of Dr. Avison, the founder of Yonsei’s medical school, the Yonsei University Health System (YUHS) undertook its first medical mission overseas in 1993, when volunteers visited Mongolia. Since then, YUHS has organized medical mission trips to Kenya, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Ethiopia. At the same time, Severance Medical Center operates “Global Severance, Global Charity.” This program welcomes overseas patients to Severance Hospital in order to provide them with specialized medical services that they are unable to access at home.

All of Yonsei’s service programs emphasize learning through real-life experience. The university considers these experiences to be essential in developing a greater sense of social awareness and civic responsibility.
