Yonsei Launches Next Generation Giga Wi-Fi on Campus

-Uninterrupted Wireless Network Available on Every Corner of Campus
-Yonsei Leads Smart Campus in Korea

With the installation of a new, stateof-the-art wireless network nearing completion, the members of Yonsei University will soon be able to enjoy uninterrupted internet access from anywhere on the Yonsei campus. This next generation wireless network will make Yonsei the most advanced “smart" campus in the nation.

Access to Wi-Fi Indoors and Outdoors

The new network includes more than 2,500 wireless access points spread throughout the campus. The extensive coverage provided by the network will create a more conducive environment for mobile-based learning, as wireless access is now available in all lecture rooms. Yonsei has also installed a number of access points in key outdoor areas, such as along Baekyangro. At the same time, internet access in the dormitories has been significantly improved.

Improved Internet Quality through Giga Wi-Fi

The speed of wireless internet will also be increased due to the next generation giga Wi-Fi technology. Furthermore, a stable network environment will be ensured through the use of Multi-User, Multiple Input Multiple Output (MUMIMO) technology in high-user areas.

Easy Access through Web Verification

In addition to faster, uninterrupted internet access, the verification procedure for connecting to the internet has been simplified. Previously, the procedure for accessing the wireless network could be rather cumbersome, due to the different operating systems used by different devices. To simplify the process, the Yonsei University Library has developed a web verification procedure that only requires the user to input her or his Yonsei Portal ID and password.

Replacement of Wired Network

Along with the upgrade in wireless technology, the university is replacing outdated wired network equipment. By installing the state-of-the-art Juniper Networks system, Yonsei will be the first university in the nation to have a 40-Gigabit Ethernet network throughout the campus. Last year, these Ethernet networks were installed in the main library and the buildings of the Engineering Research Park; by 2018, the university expects to have completed upgrades for the entire campus.

Reward System to Maintain Internet Quality

In order to ensure the quality of internet access throughout the campus, the Yonsei Library is developing a system to reward users who report locations where internet connectivity is less than optimal. According to a staff member, “the library will work hard to provide high-quality network service everywhere on campus by taking immediate action to such reports from users.” He also encourages students to “report any connectivity problems in key learning venues like the library and lecture rooms.”
