UIC Techno-Art Students Win Herald Design Tech 2015

Winning idea incorporated technology, human emotion and interaction

A team of Techno-Art students from Underwood International College (UIC) won the top award at Herald Design Tech 2015, a contest launched by Herald Corporation and sponsored by Seoul Design Foundation. The contest aims to introduce projects that merge design and technology to create innovative designs for future.

The winning team, comprised of Shinyoung Mo (IID 12), Jeebin Yim (IID 12), and Hyejin Park (CTM 12), presented a product called Spiki (combination of the words “speak” and “sticky”), an adhesive portable recorder inspired by Post-it. The idea was first thought of for the Techno-Art Capstone Project, a major requirement course for senior students in UIC’s Techno-Art Division.

Spiki was praised by the judges as “an idea that uses digital technology to preserve human sentiments.” They also commended it for its innovativeness and its potential to be commercialized. The team was awarded a certificate of merit and a prize of 10 million won.

The inaugural Herald Design Tech contest was held last year with the theme “Design Meets Technology.” Five teams out of a large pool of designers and students who submitted proposals were selected as finalists. Over a two-month period, they worked with industrial design professionals to develop and hone their ideas to create prototypes.

Da-da-ik-so, a reading application designed by another UIC student, Yein Jo (IID 12), was also among the finalists.
